Rather than relying on dramatized reenactments or narration alone, the team took restored archival photographs of the couple and combined them with pose control models, a type of AI system that can animate a still image by directing how a figure moves. According to the team, this approach was aimed at recovering the pair's actual mannerisms and micro-expressions, rather than approximating them through an actor's performance. The result is part of Love, Rendered, a documentary that leans on AI-assisted reconstruction to fill in a gap that traditional archival filmmaking simply couldn't, since no camera was rolling when Burt and Ethelle's story began. Google DeepMind shared details of the project on X, framing it as an example of using generative tools to reconstruct memory rather than manufacture fiction.
