Avataar Builds Video AI Under India's AI Mission

Startup Avataar is developing a generative video model tailored to Indian languages and culture, one of a dozen companies tapped by India's government-backed AI Mission for subsidized compute.

India has lagged behind the U.S., China, and Europe in releasing homegrown AI models, and the few that have emerged domestically have mostly been language or voice systems rather than video generators. Avataar is positioning itself to fill that gap, building a video generation model designed specifically for Indian users, languages, and visual sensibilities rather than adapting a Western-built tool after the fact. The company's approach centers on making the model cheaper and faster to run while still reflecting local context, an aim that matters given how much video content across India spans dozens of languages and regional cultural references that many mainstream AI video tools weren't trained to handle well. Avataar's push is tied to a broader government effort called the India AI Mission, a program worth roughly $1.2 billion that aims to jump-start domestic AI development. As part of that initiative, selected startups get access to subsidized GPU compute, a resource that is normally a major cost barrier for training large models, in exchange for agreeing to release their models publicly.
